Introduction
Imaging being born with only one arm; life would be difficult but not impossible. Say you were born without any arms; life would be impossible. Now imagine that you were born with no arms and no legs; life would definitely be impossible. Welcome to the world of Nick Vujicic
Nick Vujicic (pronounced Vooy-cheech) was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1982 to Dušanka and Borislav Vujičić, Serbian immigrants from Yugoslavia. He was raised Serbian Orthodox in his early years, but the family later converted to Protestantism. Vujicic’s father is a pastor in the Apostolic Christian Church. Vujicic was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disability characterised by the absence of arms and legs.[1]
The early years
According to Vujicic’s autobiography, his mother refused to see him or hold him immediately after his birth; instead, she and her husband left the hospital. The Vujicic’s had two children after Nick, both had no physical deformities.
While Nick’s parents initially struggled with grief and confusion about his condition, they became completely supportive of him and raised him to look at the bright side of life.[2]
He was bullied at school because of his physical condition. At one point, Nick attempted to commit suicide by drowning himself in a bathtub. As he was attempting to fill his lungs with water, he saw in his mind, his parents crying over his grave and thinking that they could have done more. He immediately stopped his quest to end his life.
He was born with two small, deformed feet, one of which Nick calls his “chicken drumstick” because of its shape. Originally, he was born with the toes of his left foot fused. An operation successfully separated the toes so that he could use them as fingers to grab, turn a page, use his mobile phone and perform other functions. He operates his electric wheelchair with this foot, and it enables him to move around. He can type 40-45 words per minute but after two cups of coffee, he can reach 53.
He graduated from Griffith University at the age of 21 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, with a double major in accountancy and financial planning.
The turning point in Nick’s life
Nick was always looking for a convincible answer to understand why God made him the way he is. For which Nick says that enlightenment came while he was going through the Bible, he was fascinated by an amazing story from John chapter 9, where he read that, one day the Lord Jesus encountered a blind man and the people around him questioned the lord for the reason behind the man’s blindness, Jesus’ answer is in verse 3 but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. That moment Nick believed if God had a plan for the blind man, he would surely have a plan for him as well.
Nick, the Christian evangelist and motivational speaker
He was inspired by his school janitor who urged him to tell his story about his condition to school audiences. Following this advice, Nick began speaking to small groups of people for the next two years, before finding himself in front of a hall of 300 year 10 students, an experience that he said made his “knees shake.” At about three minutes into his talk, half the girls were crying, one of them put up her hand and asked, “I am so sorry to interrupt, but can I come up and hug you?’ and upon doing so, she whispered. ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you, no one has ever told me that they loved me and that I am beautiful the way I am.’” That experience changed his life; he knew God was ministering to her through him. And that God had called him into public ministry.
Nick’s ministry goes international
Nick states: At the age of nineteen, I announced plans for my first international speaking tour. I had arranged to travel to South Africa with the goal of giving away twenty thousand dollars in savings to needy orphans there.
My parents strongly objected to this audacious plan, as you might imagine. They were concerned for my safety while journeying through a rugged part of the world in a wheelchair. And they were shocked that I would dish out my hard-earned nest egg at such a young age.
I reminded them that they’d always said there were no limits on my life, and every single night of my childhood they’d made sure I prayed and asked God to help the poor children of the world.
“You planted the seeds for this!” I said. They were not amused, but they did not stand in my way. Mum and Dad are still sometimes taken aback by my big dreams and adventurous spirit, but they are always encouraging and willing to pitch in.[3]
Nick tells his own story here. The video is just over 3 minutes.
